Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul. And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, and his armor, and even his sword and his bow and his belt.
1 Samuel 18:3-4
Father God, I am amazed. Though David loved Jonathan, it is Jonathan who is demonstrating his love in a tangible way. It was Jonathan’s soul that was “knit to the soul of David” (1 Samuel 18:1). It was Jonathan who made a covenant with David. I’m not thinking that this relationship is one sided. Far from it. Your Word shows David’s love for Jonathan, especially after Jonathan’s life is taken. What amazes me today is the parallels I see between the love that Jonathan has for David and the love Christ has for me.
You gave David favor in the eyes of the king’s son, who was heir to be king over Israel, and caused David to enjoy the benefits of being in the king’s family. The love was so deep that a one-sided covenant was made with David. David did nothing to earn it. It was just so.
You have given me favor in the eyes of Your Son, Whom You declared is and shall be the Sovereign Ruler of the all things, placed on the throne to be the King of kings, and caused me to enjoy the benefits of being in Your family. This was enacted through a one sided covenant. I did nothing to earn it. It was made so by the sacrifice of Jesus on my behalf. Wow!
Today, I just pause to praise and worship You for what You have done! How awesome is the love that You have shown towards me that I would be called Your child. And that is what I am (1 John 3:1)! I look today to please You (2 Corinthians 5:9), that whatever I do I might be done to Your glory (1 Corinthians 10:31). I want to show You my eternal appreciation for all the love You have thrown my way (Colossians 3:17). Thank You for Your inexpressible gift (1 Corinthians 9:15)! Hallelujah! Amen!
