Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

Matthew 26:26-28

Lord Jesus, today is that day when You spent Your last hours before Your death with all Your disciples. And breaking bread, You pointed them, and us, towards the glorious significance of Your sacrifice. Even now my mind races, thinking about the significance of all that took place that night, from the washing of their feet, to the breaking of bread, to Your priestly prayer, to Your anguish in Gethsemane. This was the longest night of Your glorious life here on earth. You saw the betrayal of Judas, the denial of Peter, and the fleeing of all Your disciples. That night You stood alone. Yet, You had the Father and You had Your purpose. And that was enough. Though those whom You loved and created abandoned You, where You were, squarely in the center of the will of the Father for Your life was enough. Indeed, that blows my mind! Especially since I can selfishly find myself wanting more. Have mercy!

Master, my soul is overwhelmed today by the significance of that night. Words are not enough; I cannot get close to finding the right words to convey my deep sense of awe, shame, and gratitude. You were about to do what I would dare do for anyone, especially those who neither love nor respect me. And yet, You marched heroically into the face of certain death declaring that You knew Who You are and what Your purpose in this life is. Oh, that I could do the same! Thank You for all that You have done for not just me, but for all who call upon Your Name. Thank You for loving them, us, enough share that last supper with them, serving them, us, and giving Your life as a ransom. Thank You for not just being our God, but being our Friend and Lover of our souls. Help me to remain in this state of worship and awe before You today. Enable me to give the honor due to You each and every moment of this day. Thank You, my King! Amen!
