For we walk by faith, not by sight.
2 Corinthians 5:7
Lord Jesus, eight simple words that are hard to live by. There is so much that You have called me to do that feels like it is over my head. There are ways in which You have declared I must live my life where I honestly don’t know how I can do it. And even now, as I prepare to approach the challenges of the day my soul wonders how I will get through it. I can see and hear the battles coming my way. I am quickly overwhelmed by the torrent rushing in my direction. And as I sprint towards the weekend where I will worship You in community, I often wonder if I will even make it.
Yet, You declare that I walk by faith not by sight.
This morning I remind my soul what You have declared about me.
- I am the head not the tail (Deuteronomy 28:13). That doesn’t necessarily mean that it will always look as if I am on top (sight), but I will win in the end because You’ve got my back (faith).
- You will bless my going out and coming in (Deuteronomy 28:6). That doesn’t mean that the path will be easy (sight), but that You will always show me the “silver lining” in the struggle (faith).
- You will supply all of my needs (Philippians 4:19). That doesn’t mean that I will never have a season of lack (sight), but that You will make sure that I have what I need to make it (faith).
- You will answer me when I call (Matthew 7:7). That doesn’t mean that I will necessarily hear or understand clearly Your response (sight), but that You will speak to me and I will eventually understand (faith).
- You will guide me (Proverbs 3:5-6). That doesn’t mean I won’t get lost (sight), but that in my wandering I can trust I am being led by You (faith)
- You will be my strength (2 Corinthians 12:9-10). That doesn’t mean not mean that I will not feel weak and helpless (sight), but that You will give me what I need when I need it to get through (faith).
- You will not let me fall (Psalm 37:23-24). That doesn’t mean I will not trip or stumble (sight), but that You will be there to hold me up, pick me up, and keep me moving towards You (faith).
Lord, there is so much more. You’ve promised to protect me (Psalm 91:3), give me peace (Isaiah 26:3), give me rest (Matthew 11:28-29), and remove my anxiety (Philippians 4:6-7). I cry out, “I believe! Help my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24) I know that You can do exceedingly and abundantly above all I ask or think (Ephesians 3:20). Help me today, Lord Jesus, to walk in that knowledge, by faith and not by sight, knowing that You are faithful Who promised (Hebrews 10:23). Amen.
