Joash did what was right in the eyes of the LORD all the years of Jehoiada the priest…After the death of Jehoiada, the officials of Judah came and paid homage to the king, and he listened to them.
2 Chronicles 24:2, 17 (NIV)
Father God, I live in a world where everyone appears to be fickle. Whether it’s politics, favorite restaurants, cars we like, places we like to go, we appear to be swayed by the wind. Today we lean one way; tomorrow we lean another. And it all seems to depend upon how we feel and who has our ear.
Yet, there are some things in this life that we are not fickle about; our favorite sports team, our favorite songs, or even our favorite thing to do in our spare time. Yet, this morning, my soul hears You emphatically demanding that I not be fickle as it pertains to You. The call on my life is to follow You faithfully, not to be tossed back and forth by every teaching that comes my way (Ephesians 4:14), but instead to be steadfast and unmovable (1 Corinthians 15:58). As I look at Joash he was that way when he had godly folks in his life. Yet, when those people were gone, his true self shined through. Father, I don’t want to be that person.
So I pray for staying power, that I might continue on the path You have led me even when those whom You have raised up to be my spiritual guides and mentors move on to new assignments. For certain, their fingerprints are all over my life. You have used them to show me what it means to love You, serve You, and be Your disciple. Words can never convey the appreciation that I have for how their contributions have made my life better and my walk with You sweeter. However, the call for me is to rise up and be the person You have called me to be, to walk faithfully in You, and not to depend upon somebody else to know what Your will is for my life. You have called me not to have fickle faith. You admonish me to study to show myself approved (2 Timothy 2:15). Yes, I need mentors in my life. However, the end goal is for me to mature in my relationship with You so that I don’t need them to be faithful. You are all that I need.
So today, please show me where I need to grow up in Christ and become more mature. Show me how I am relying on the faith of others and not standing hand-in-hand with Jesus. Remind me that all who pour into me only do it for a season. And that my true source of truth, hope, and strength is found only at the fount that flows from Your throne. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.
