For to which of the angels did God ever say, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father”? Or again, “I will be his Father, and he will be my Son”?

Hebrews 1:5 (NIV)

Lord Jesus, my soul is awed by the incomprehensible relationship and Oneness that You have with the Father! As this first chapter of Hebrews makes clear, You far exceed the angelic host. But that is easy for my mind to grasp. But for the Father to call You God (1:9), declare You have all the attributes of God (1:10), ascribe to You the very things pertaining to the creation of the world that the Scriptures declared God did (1:10), and yet also remind us that the Father told You to sit at His right hand while HE made Your enemies Your footstool (1:13) speaks to a level of the mystery of the Trinity that I truly cannot fathom! You, the Father and the Holy Spirit are One God but three Persons! Oh, the glorious depth and majestic wonder of that truth! Inseparable in all Your ways but truly one in Who You are!

And to think, You, my God, began to reveal it with Christmas! The Name prophesied that You would be called is so fitting: Immanuel (Isaiah 7:14). Through You and by You I am able to understand Who You, my God, are better. Because You came into this world in innocence, lived Your life in perfection, and died in humility, I now can have an intimate and personal relationship with my Creator. What’s more, LORD, You showed me how to live righteously, demonstrating in Your behaviors, motivations, and actions what it means to serve You. With just one clear interpretation of Your Law – to love You with all my heart, soul, and mind, and to love my neighbor as myself – You removed the shackles that self-righteousness and legalism placed on my blinded mind and set me free to live my life to Your glory!

I worship You, my God, this morning. Thank You for coming in the flesh, enduring what I daily endure, showing me how to do so without sinning (Hebrews 4:15). Thank You for becoming lower than the angels for a little while so that I can see what true glorification looks like (Hebrews 2:9), providing for me a foretaste of what it will be like for me when I shed this sinful flesh and am myself glorified to serve You eternally! Thank You for sharing in my humanity and thereby breaking the hold that death and sin had on me (Hebrews 2:14-15). And thank You for Your glorious help as I go through on this side, enabling me to overcome even as You overcame (Hebrews 2:18). Because You came as that Baby Boy, my life was transformed for eternity. My heart and soul give You thanks for Your indescribable gift (2 Corinthians 9:15)! Amen!
