So the crowd answered him, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?”
John 12:34 (ESV)
Lord Jesus, as I slowly make my way into this Christmas season I am struck by the fact that when You came You were not what the world expected but did more than anyone could have imagined!
Whereas they were expecting a King, You came as a Servant. They were expecting victory over their physical enemies, You gave us victory over spiritual enemies. They were expecting You to reign in their presence, You reign today from Heaven. It is not that what they expected to see would not or will not come to pass. It shall. But the glory of Christmas is that in that marvelous baby in the manger came the remedy that only could have been cured by You – sin’s grip on mankind. In innocent splendor, You quietly came into this world, lived and loved amongst us, and inevitably gave Your life for us so that we could spend our lives with You. True, it is not what we expected. It is far greater!
So today, my soul rejoices in answering that question, “Who is this Son of Man.” He is the King of kings, and Lord of lords. He is the great I Am, Sustainer and Giver of life. He is altogether beautiful, the Rose of Sharon, the Lily of the Valley, the Bright and Morning Star. He is the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End. He is the Chief Cornerstone, the Head of the Church. But more importantly, He is the Shepherd and Bishop of my soul, my Friend Who sticks closer than a brother, my Savior and my All-in-All. Lord, You are my everything. My soul rejoices in You. Thank You for coming, loving, and saving.
