O LORD, make me know my end and what is the measure of my days; let me know how fleeting I am!

Psalm 39:4

Father God, I am reminded this morning that I am mortal, that my time here is limited. As I reflect upon my life, many things from my childhood feel like only yesterday. And as I sit here before You, my mind asks the question, “Where has all the time gone?”

I must confess, often I have lived life as if I have nothing but time before me. I have filled the seconds with thoughtless activities and deeds, either entertaining my flesh or losing myself in the moment, not conscious of time and just “living”. David reminds me this that time is actually a luxury, something that is not guaranteed to me beyond right now. And though he may not have meant it in this way, my heart, too, is asking me, “And now, O Lord, for what do I wait?” (Psalm 39:7) I am asking myself what is getting in the way of me accomplishing what You have placed me on this earth for? What world-based activity is stealing my attention from the things of You?

Father I thank You for every day of life that You have given me. I thank You for giving me the strength and power to live it out, even if I have not always shown up as the person You have intended me to be. I recognize not only that my life is limited, but also that it is fragile, that at any moment You can call me home. As my Savior reminds me, I must work while it is day for when night comes no man shall work. (John 9:4)

I come before You today and ask the simple question, “What would You have me to do?” What are the really important things that You would have me to accomplish, starting today, with the remaining time that I have here? I commit today to begin to list what You would have me to put my hands and heart to and to clearly outline what I intend to accomplish this day, this month, in the next six months and the next year. Help to live my life purposefully and purpose driven, with a divine sense of urgency, even as Jesus did, not wasting time but accomplishing Your will and advancing Your kingdom, savoring every hour, minute and second that You have given me here on this earth. Use me to glorify You this day and every day in Jesus’ Name.
