Even when they had made for themselves a golden calf and said, ‘This is your God who brought you up out of Egypt,’ and had committed great blasphemies, you in your great mercies did not forsake them in the wilderness.
Nehemiah 9:18-19
Father, how many times have we, on this side of our Lord’s resurrection, misrepresented Who You are by constructing a “god” that is no God? How many times have we created a false “You” by constructing these theological perspectives drawn from Your Word, missing what You are truly saying that we should know and learn about You? Indeed, I know that I have been guilty of this! Yet, You have been gracious and merciful to me, not forsaking me nor leaving me alone. Just like many a time You could have left the Israelites to their own devices, You could have left me to my own. Yet, You did not. Though You disciplined me in the moment, soon after followed Your grace and Your mercy! How great You are!
Lord, I long to have and understand the need to have a solid, Biblically based, theological perspective concerning You. I have dedicated most of my life to that pursuit. However, today I am reminded that it is infinitely more important to just know You, understand You, and believe in You. Christ reminded us to be like a child in our faith (Matthew 18:3-5). So often I fall into the trap of trying to convey that I am a “mature” believer who is sound theologically, spewing forth all kinds of “spiritual terms”. Yet, today my soul is reminded it does not require all that. The thief on the cross with my Lord did not fully understand who my Savior was. He just said remember me when You get to Your kingdom. Some of his last dying words. Simple and to the point.
Help me today to get back to that place of simple, childlike faith, a place where I just believe and am amazed. Help me to let go of this overwhelming sense that I have to have all the the answers concerning You and be able to address all questions. Bring me to that awesome place of pure amazement, fascination and wonder. Help me to just be taken aback by Your glory, not needing to define You, because that can often lead to the construction of someone or something that is not You. Instead, continue to just blow my mind with Your awesomeness! In Jesus’ Name, amen!
