To Seth also a son was born, and he called his name Enosh. At that time people began to call upon the name of the LORD.
Genesis 4:26
Father God, I find it quite interesting that Seth, Adam’s third son, whose name means “appointed,” had a son that he named Enosh, which means “mortal man” with an emphasis on frailty. After having to endure the loss of two sons, one at the hand of the elder and the elder an outcast, Adam remembered that You said there will be an appointed one who would satisfy Your judgement upon the serpent. And though Adam looked to Seth to be that one, Seth, seeing his own brokenness and need for You, names his son as merely mortal. And it was at that point that people began to call upon You.
How often have I thought we could do it on my own, only to realize that I am inadequate? How many times have I striven to achieve heights only to fall short, realizing that I did not have it in me, but needed a greater power outside of me? It is in those moments that I can either wallow in defeat or look up.
Today, my soul looks up. Ie look to You to as my sole source of joy and comfort. In You I seek to find success in life as well as victory over my sinfulness. No longer do I believe that I have what it takes to overcome this world. Whether on m job, in my family, or in my service to You, I know that I am frail, only mortal, an “Enosh” doing the best I can. Yet, I rejoice in knowing that there is a truly an appointed One, One Who though He came in the flesh, was fully divine, perfect in all of His ways. And my soul finds not only great joy but unspeakable peace when I call upon His Name, because He is You in the flesh!
So today, LORD, I just want to thank You for sending Jesus to mend the fracture that exists between You and Your creation. Thank You for the repair that He has made to my relationship with You and with others. Thank You that in Him and through Him I have been reconciled with You, and that by the power of the Holy Spirit I am able to walk in the newness of life, no longer separated, but instead one with You. Let today be the first day of the rest of my life, that I, together with all who believe in Him, might find that peace which passes all understanding, knowing who we are and Whose we are. In Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen.
