We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work.
John 9:4 (ESV)
Lord Jesus, coming out of the holidays I confess I am harboring a spirit of procrastination. Within me there is this “blah” feeling that tells me to put stuff off until later. Having had some time off to celebrate Christmas and New Years I should be invigorated and recharged. Instead it almost feels like I have to drag myself to get up and get to it.
What makes this worse is the potential that it can also impact my spiritual life. Rather than following my disciplines of rising up in the morning and reading Your Word my mind tells me to hit the snooze button two or three times. Rather than taking the time to immerse myself in prayer I would rather throw up a few words to You here and there, and call it a day. And what is so terribly sad about it is that I see it for what it is: my flesh getting in the way of the things of You!
This morning my spirit is reminded of Your words and Your sense of urgency regarding the things You were sent here to accomplish. It is not lost on me that You wasted no time, no efforts, no conversations, no actions. Everything You did had a divine purpose towards fulfilling Your divine calling here on earth. You were intimately familiar with the urgency of the moment, and You took care of business. Your actions made it clear that we must work “while it’s day; night is coming, when no one can work.”
I pray today for that same sense of urgency regarding what You are calling me to accomplish. From minor tasks around home like clearing off my desk, cleaning the toilet or preparing a meal, to Holy Spirit driven engagement of individuals He brings to my mind or spiritual fasting and praying, remind me that my time here is short, my mission is great, and that I have a unique calling in the Kingdom that was divinely orchestrated by You for me to accomplish. Lord I intentionally set my heart at putting You first, Your Kingdom and Your righteousness. Everything else will take care of itself (Matthew 6:33-34). Thank You for Your perfect example and continual conviction. Use me to Your glory. Amen!
