So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
John 8:36 (ESV)
Lord Jesus, today is that day where folks in our nation celebrate our country’s “freedom.” Taking the day off from work we gather at cookouts, lounge around and fellowship with friends and loved ones, and cap the evening off with fireworks. 249 years ago the people of this soon to be nation took it upon themselves to say that George III was not their king. And from this a nation was born.
What my soul is sensitive to this morning was that the type of freedom that they espoused does not compare to the freedom that we have in You! The bondage that sin has on a soul is real. As I look at those forefathers, I can see sin’s deceptiveness. How else can one explain the hypocrisy of “freedom fighters” themselves owning slaves?
Today, while the rest of the nation celebrates America’s declaration of freedom, I celebrate the true freedom that is mine in You! Yes, I enjoy the benefits that come from being a citizen of this country. Yet, I declare that it does not compare with the benefits that are mine for being a citizen of Your Kingdom! You have mercifully pardoned all of my sin. You have graciously given me everything I need for life and godliness. Your love for me is immeasurable. Your plans for me incomprehensible. I am blessed beyond my understanding. Great is Thy faithfulness!
So, Lord Jesus, on this day, I pause to celebrate how great You are! My soul falls before You in holy reverence, thanking You for the freedom that only matters in this world. I love You, Lord. Thank You! Amen!
