“A certain moneylender had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. When they could not pay, he cancelled the debt of both. Now which of them will love him more?”
Luke 7:41-42
Father, I know what it is to be in debt. In a world where “more is better” I, like so many others, occasionally find myself in a place where I am compelled to make a purchase that is a beyond my means. I borrow to get it. And with the promise of not having to make the first payment, I go off merrily with the “thing”, enjoying it now, putting off thinking about the burden of making those payments until later. Then later comes…
When that first man transgressed he took on a debt for all of us, one that was passed down through the generations. Though payments were made through substitutionary sacrifices, they never fully covered the cost because You declared the soul that sins shall die (Ezekiel 18:20).
Then Your Son, Jesus, came in the flesh and made the ultimate payment on our behalf, canceling our debt record, and freeing us from the obligation. Through Him and by Him our debts were completely forgiven. And with the infusion of the Holy Spirit, we who were once dead are now alive. Alive. Forgiven. What a show of grace! Through the pain that He willingly suffered on my behalf I can now come to You, have access to You! Indeed, this grace is amazing! What a gift (Romans 6:23)!
This morning I worship You, my God, praising and glorifying Your Name for the finished work of my Savior on Calvary! Through the work of the Holy Spirit, Who dwells within me, I not only see clearly what You have done, but am able to now live a life pleasing to You. Thank You for this most supreme example of love bestowed upon such an unworthy vessel as I! Thank You for seeing me in my state of desperate need and meeting that need through the cross of Jesus Christ! Thank You for not leaving me to my own devices but instead providing redemption through Him! I am this day and every day blown away by Your amazing grace! Thank You!
