I went away full, and the LORD has brought me back empty. Why call me Naomi, when the LORD has testified against me and the Almighty has brought calamity upon me?”

Ruth 1:21

Father, as I meditate on this verse today, I realize that sometimes I don’t know what I have. While my eyes are so focused on what is not going right, I often miss what You are actually doing in my midst. Yes, Naomi’s life was filled with tragic loss. Yet, she had Ruth, which she overlooked. This same Ruth would not leave her when she was at her lowest (Ruth 1:16), was willing to work hard to provide food for her (Ruth 2:2), and would eventually give her a grandson to fill the loss of her sons (Ruth 4:13).

And that is how it is for me! Whereas Naomi had Ruth, I have You! When I am at my lowest You are there, never leaving me, no matter how bad things are. When I am suffering through lack, You provide what I stand in the need of. And You do so in abundance! And when I suffer loss, You make up the difference, bridging the gap and lifting up my head. Thus, my soul cries out,

Why are you cast down, O my soul,
and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
my salvation and my God.
Psalms 42:5-6a

Help me today not to miss Your blessing in the midst. Continue to remind me of Your presence, not being so caught up in what I am going through that I don’t see You at work. Help me not to wallow in sorrow, having a pity party. But instead, be the Lifter up of my head! I am better today than I was yesterday because You are in my life! I praise You and worship You in Jesus’ Name!
