He poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed him to consecrate him.
Leviticus 8:12 (NIV)
Father God, my soul is struck with love and humility this morning as my mind reflects upon this scene. Standing before this assembly, Your servant Moses carefully and meticulously robes Aaron in the attire that You prescribed the high priest, Your future representative of the people, should wear, and anoints him before the people. This was the same Aaron who just followed the will of the people and created a golden calf and lied about it! And yet You honor him by making him the one who makes atonement for the sins of the people!
My soul is awed and reminded of the glorious fact that Christ’s blood can redeem even the most vile of us. When I look at my sins and how I have failed You both before You saved me and after, my soul cries out in humility, “Who am I that You are mindful of me?” Yet this image reminds me that You are long-suffering towards us, not willing that any should perish (2 Peter 2:9), that You sent Christ to die for the worst of us (1 Timothy 1:15), reminding us Your glorious saving grace.
Thank You, Lord, for seeing past my faults, foibles and failings, and seeing my need. Thank You forgiving and putting into the past my idolatry, selfishness, and sinfulness and setting me apart as Your child. Thank You for making Amazing Grace my theme song. Thank You, Lord, for loving the unlovable, sending Jesus to die for the undeserving, and giving to the guilty the unimaginable. Thank You for doing what Aaron and his successors could not do. Through and by Jesus I am ushered into Your family, and today I can declare I’m Yours! Thank You. Amen.
