So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood.
Hebrews 13:12 (ESV)
Father, as Thanksgiving approaches, I have committed in my heart to reflect upon all that I am truly thankful for. This morning, as I read this verse, my soul was immediately captivated by the weight and gravity of it. In my mind’s eye I can see my Savior being led in procession amidst a riotous mob, Simon the Cyrene aiding Him in carrying His cross, outside the gates of the city, outside the “safety” of its walls. It was there, on Golgotha, Calvary, that He gave up His life for me, taking upon His shoulders the judgement that I, and all who call upon Him, deserve. And by this one act He paid the price for me, a price I could not pay…
Lord Jesus, You suffered for me. You endured shame and ridicule for me. You allowed them to abuse You and humiliate You for me. You suffered the worse thing imaginable – separation from Father God – for me. Honestly, the word “suffer” does not seem to hold enough gravity or weight as compared to what You went through for me. It falls so short. And yet, You did it all for me. And what blows my mind is that You did it that You might sanctify me, setting me apart, calling me Your own!
What shall I render to You? What can I give to You that even comes close to repaying You for Your selfless act of love? Nothing! There is nothing I can do or surrender that can compare to what You have done for me! John’s words ring so loudly in my mind this morning, “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” (1 John 3:1) I don’t deserve this. What You have done for me completely blows my mind! I don’t know what to do.
The words “thank You” fall so short of the depth and gratitude that I have for Your glorious love towards me. Thank You, Lord, for all You have done for me. Thank You, Lord, for loving me when I was most unlovable. Thank You for paying the price I could not pay, doing for me what I would not do for myself, let alone somebody else. Thank You for being my all-in-all! Thank You!
So, today, my soul sings those words, “I give myself away, so that You can use me.” I am Yours, Jesus. Just as You gave Your life for me, I give my life to You, afresh and anew this morning. Set me apart for Your work. Use me as You see fit. And please, accept my sacrifice of praise to You, my God. I worship You today and glorify Your Holy and Righteous Name! Praise be unto You! Amen!
