At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”
Matthew 18:1 (ESV)
Lord Jesus, I live in a world where everyone is competing in some form or fashion. Whether on the job, at school, or even at home, we are constantly vying for “status” either alongside someone, or above or below them. When we are young we look to see who is taller, me or my friend. When we are in class, who got the better grade. At home, who does mommy or daddy love the most. And even in church, who can pray the best, dress the best, or preach the best. Something broken in plagues us with the question, who is better.
You are amazing, Lord. When we come to You with this infantile, juvenile, petty competitions, asking You who is the greatest, You compassionately look us in the eyes, and pointing to a small child, challenge us to be like them, full of wonder and joy, not concerned about being truly better, or being truly first, but enjoying the moment with friends, and more importantly, looking to You in reverence, joy and gratitude. I remember when I was a small child. I wasn’t caught up with all those “better than” feelings. I just played and enjoyed life, knowing I was loved and being loved. That’s what I want with You today and everyday Jesus!
So I pray that today, and moving forward everyday, that You would continue to remind me of the joy of being the Father’s child, that it is not a competition, that I don’t have to prove myself, and that this is not test that I have to get a better grade on than others. No. This is, to quote Friedrich Nietzsche, “A long obedience in the same direction.” It is about being patient and steadfast in my walk with You, and along the way, taking in the joy and splendor of being Yours. Help to just have fun being a child of God, loving and being loved, all to Your glory. Amen.
