Now we pray to God that you will not do anything wrong—not so that people will see that we have stood the test but so that you will do what is right even though we may seem to have failed.
2 Corinthians 13:7 (NIV)
Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them.
Matthew 6:1 (NIV)
Lord Jesus I pray this morning for a spirit that has the mindset that I have nothing to prove to anyone. In a world where everyone is trying to prove their worth, attempting to show that they not only belong but are “worthy,” folks try to demonstrate to onlookers that they are somebody. Whether it is by title, accomplishments, or accolades, there is this spirit of “look what I have done” that pervades all of society. And honestly, I sometimes find myself caught up in that. I take pride in what I have acquired, the pat on the backs I have received, the seats at the table I am invited to, who I have met, am in relationship with, or have advised – the list goes on. And, if I am not careful, I find that what I do I do so that I can win the applause of those watching and reap these very acknowledgments.
Master, Your Words today prick my heart. As I read Paul’s closing instructions to Your people in 2 Corinthians 13:7, I was reminded how easily the good that I do – the “nothing wrong” that Paul is referencing – can be for show or even so that others can get credit and not for Your glory. I can hear Your Spirit asking me not only what am I doing to glorify You, but more importantly why? I admit there is a part that is truly all about lifting You up and pleasing You. But I must confess in it is sprinkled with selfish ambition, personal pride, and a dash of glory-seeking self. And that leaven can spoil the whole loaf!
I lay before You all that I intend to do today and pray it to might be purified, purged of vainglory, and made whole and righteous before You. Show me where self subtly gets in the way. Remind me that it isn’t even about making someone else feel good about themselves, though that is a rewarding byproduct. That which I do I do to Your glory, that others might see You in me, and that my life might be used to advance Your Kingdom. Period. It in no way is about me or about others. It is about You. That Lord, is my aim today and everyday: To glorify You. You, Lord, are my great reward! Be glorified! Amen!
