He who is the Portion of Jacob is not like these, for he is the Maker of all things, including the people of his inheritance — the LORD Almighty is his name.

Jeremiah 51:19 (NIV)

Lord God I can get so caught up in trying to put a ring fence around what is mine. I get a mindset like the world around me and assign true value to that which, in reality has no true value at all! Things like my home, car, and other material possessions serve a real purpose as it pertains to my creature comforts. Things like my job, position in the company, school I’ve attended, degrees and accolades serve a real purpose as it pertains to me advancing my work life agenda. Things like my family, friends and associates serve a real purpose as it pertains to my relational aspirations. In their right place, they do help make my life better.

Yet I am aware of a real problem that can manifest itself regarding them: I can place each of them on a pedestal and idolize them if I am not careful. Each can easily be transformed into an idol, something that I am attributing life and power to, that have none. Master, You are my Portion. You are the Maker and Creator of all things. All that is good in this life is because of You, the Giver of every good and perfect gift (James 1:17). Even the beautiful relationships that I have and enjoy are because of You!

As I march towards the close of this work week, I do so with praise on my lips and conviction on my soul. Continue to show me where I am allowing the people and things of this world to take Your place. Instead, enable me to keep You first, others second, and me a distant third. Show me how I can use my words to speak love, life and hope into the lives of others. Point me towards how I can serve in the strength and wisdom that You provide. Use me today to point others towards Jesus, that He might be glorified in me and through me (1 Peter 4:11). And all that I would raise up on this side of eternity, the “crowns” that You graciously reward me with in this life, I cast at Your feet, declaring, “You are worthy, my Lord and God!” Amen!
