For when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore by himself, saying, “Surely I will bless you and multiply you.” And thus Abraham, having patiently waited, obtained the promise.

Hebrews 6:13-15 (ESV)

Father God, You know that patience is not my strong suit. The hustle and bustle of this world actually feels like it suits me. I am so compelled to just get up and get it done so that I can get it off my plate, tick the box, scratch it off the list. And I wish I could say it was because I am an overachiever. I am not. Nor is it because I am driven. I am not. It is because I just want to get it done. I don’t want it looming in the back of my mind. And unfortunately, this infects how I look at things I expect others to do for me, especially when they make a commitment to get it done. And I’m ashamed to say this: even when it comes to You.

I confess this is a flaw in my character. It reflects a failure in my faith. It goes against everything that I have learned that faith is – the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1). And it is a sign of my ongoing hardheadedness regarding Your admonishment that I follow the example of those who, through faith and obedience inherit Your promises (Hebrews 6:12). I am caught up in this microwave society that waiting just does not seem practical.

But it is.

Father, I have seen so many lives changed, so many hearts healed, so many folks made whole who had the audacity to just wait on You. And conversely, I have seen so many mistakes made, so many hearts hurt, and so many lives broken because folks decided to take matters into their own hands. And this day, I don’t want to be that person.

So today, I purpose in my heart and mind to wait on You. You know all that I have laid at Your throne. You know what and where I need You to intervene in my life. Today, my soul sits patiently waiting on You. This I know for certain: You are faithful. If You said it, You shall bring it to pass – in Your timing. And what I have seen and know is that Your timing is always right on time. So, Father, I wait on You. Have Your way today and please peace be still my soul. Grant me a rest like my Savior’s as He slept in the boat in the midst of the storm to Your glory. Amen.
