Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house.
Luke 10:38 (ESV)
Lord Jesus, on this first day of September my mind is consumed with all that I have to accomplish today. My day is starting off early and will end late. Like Martha I know I’m going to be consumed with all that I have on my plate to get done. And like her, in the back of my mind I not only fear I won’t but am also wondering who will help me.
My soul in this moment is reminded of those calming words You spoke to Martha at the height of her distress,“Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. There is only one thing that You need to focus on, and Mary has chosen that one thing. It will not be taken from her.” And what my soul remembers at the threshold of this fray is that when I invite You into my “home” that there is a place for me to escape from the fray and find that greater part that Mary discovered.
So I pray today that You would continue to remind me throughout this day to stop being consumed with the hustle and bustle, and steal away to that place where I can rest at Your feet. Don’t allow me to be so consumed with what’s going on that I forget the power of Your presence. And most importantly, continue to remind me that I have done the “hard part.” I have invited You in, welcomed Your presence in my life, answered the knock at the door of my heart. Now, what remains for me is to allow You to come in and sup with me (Revelations 3:20). That, in the end, is my truest desire today – to fellowship with You.
Come into my day, Lord Jesus. Grant me Your calming peace. Take over. Amen.
